OpenAI has officially announced a strategic partnership with Oracle to advance the ambitious Stargate AI Data Center initiative—a cornerstone in building the physical infrastructure powering the global AI revolution.
While much of the conversation around AI focuses on algorithms and ethics, this collaboration highlights the massive underlying infrastructure: steel and concrete, fiber-optic networks, and power consumption on the scale of entire cities.
The joint effort will see data centers constructed across multiple U.S. locations, collectively consuming 4.5 gigawatts of electricity—enough to power millions of homes. This immense energy capacity is being dedicated to running next-generation AI systems.
Far more than just an expansion, this effort forms the core of OpenAI’s Stargate project, designed to build unprecedented computing capacity and make advanced AI capabilities accessible to everyone.
Together with the project underway in Abilene, Texas, OpenAI is now building more than 5 gigawatts of total capacity, capable of supporting over 2 million state-of-the-art AI chips operating in parallel.
This partnership also demonstrates OpenAI’s commitment to its $500 billion investment pledge in U.S.-based AI infrastructure, made at the White House. With the combined backing of Oracle and SoftBank, OpenAI now expects to surpass that goal.
But the initiative is not just about technology—it’s about people. Stargate is projected to generate more than 100,000 new jobs, ranging from construction and electrical engineering to AI system operations.
In Abilene, construction is already in full swing. NVIDIA’s latest GB200 chips are being shipped and deployed, with OpenAI researchers already running experiments on future-generation AI models.
The Stargate effort extends beyond OpenAI and Oracle: SoftBank is helping reimagine the architecture of AI data centers, while OpenAI’s cloud partner Microsoft is providing critical networking and service support.
