The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is modernizing how it delivers mission-critical applications with the launch of the UDS Registry, developed by Colorado-based startup Defense Unicorns. Described as an “app store for the military,” the platform enables warfighters to quickly select and deploy mission-specific software across platforms ranging from fighter jets to submarines.

Faster, Leaner Software for the Battlefield

Launched in June 2025, the UDS Registry is already used in more than 30 mission systems and organizations. Instead of preloading entire software suites, operators can now load only the applications required for a mission, reducing overhead and improving performance.

Defense Unicorns CEO Rob Slaughter explained that during one air combat scenario, just three apps were needed instead of all ten, cutting system load and increasing efficiency.

Pentagon’s Push for Digital Agility
#

The move supports the Pentagon’s push for faster and more flexible software delivery.

  • Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has backed the Software Acquisition Pathway for rapid digital adoption.
  • Acting CIO Katie Arrington is advancing the Software Fast Track (SWFT) program to accelerate DoD software integration.

The UDS Registry fits into this broader strategy to make military systems more software-driven and adaptable.

Designed for Isolated Environments
#

A major differentiator of the UDS Registry is its ability to operate in air-gapped or disconnected environments, where traditional cloud-based systems fail.

  • UDS Core: open-source deployment framework.
  • UDS Tactical Edge: optimized for remote and classified conditions.

This capability addresses one of the DoD’s biggest pain points: ensuring software remains secure and functional without internet connectivity.

Partnerships and Open Source Strategy
#

Defense Unicorns has adopted an open-source approach, providing the UDS Registry to the wider Defense Industrial Base. Major defense contractors such as SAIC and BAE Systems are already using UDS Core and UDS Tactical Edge.

By lowering barriers to access, the company is encouraging adoption while also competing for integration contracts.

A New Standard for Defense Software?
#

The UDS Registry could mark a turning point for how the U.S. military manages mission software. By offering a secure, efficient, and flexible way to deploy applications, it solves long-standing issues with integration delays and resource waste.

As the Pentagon accelerates digital modernization, the “app store experience” may soon become standard practice on the battlefield.
